In the summer of 1967, at the age of four, Tess received two things; a baby sister and the nickname Sister Girl. Neither of which she wanted. Life had been perfect before baby Grace came into their lives. Sure, sometimes Mama got mad at Daddy or Daddy got mad at Mama, but most days Tess enjoyed a regular routine. Eating her cereal while sitting on the floor in her underpants, watching morning cartoons, or visiting with Mrs. Gardner next door was enough to keep her happy. She didn’t see why anything needed to change, but as Mama always said, “Life moves forward and you need to move with it or you’ll get swept away.”
This humorous coming of age novel by Jonna Ivin takes the reader on a journey through the late 60’s into the early 80’s. You'll fall in love with Sister Girl as she manages to survive a world where grownups teach her how to nail clothes to the floor, hustle money at the track, and play with matches. All the while she manages the overwhelming responsibility of being the big sister to Grace (an increasingly odd child who barks at strangers).

Sister Girl eBook Jonna Ivin

This book is the most special thing I've read since The Help. I grew up in this time period, and I was amazed how nostalgic I became while reading it. Then I fell in love with the characters - first Tess, then Mama, then beloved little Grace. The characters have so much depth and dimension, and this family is portrayed so perfectly. I wanted to play with Tess, I wanted to sit at the table and watch them all interact. During several scenes I felt like I was doing just that. So many times in the book I would laugh out loud, then the next minute I would find myself tearing up. I immediately wanted all of my friends to be reading it so I could have someone to talk to about it. It's just precious on so many levels. These characters are such a part of all of us, and Tess is my new hero. I picked it up Saturday afternoon and didn't put it down until I was finished Saturday night. I've read thousands of books - literally thousands - and this is by far one of my all-time favorites ever. I hope you read it. I hope you love it one-tenth as much as I do. Thank you Ms. Ivin for writing it.

Sister Girl eBook Jonna Ivin Reviews

I couldn't help but fall in love with each character! Grace being my favorite because she's a beautiful little weirdo. Tess is the big sister every kid should have, boy or girl. I enjoyed this well written journey to the very last sentence, which admittely, I was crying when I reached. Even though I wished it would never end, it ended perfectly. Bravo Jonna, BRAVO!
This book is listed as a novel but I would guess that it is highly autobiographical. It was hopeful to see how children can survive a less-than-perfect childhood. It was also a tribute to the author's mother to have raised self-sufficient daughters under very adverse circumstances.
Having been born in the 60’s and growing up in the 70’s, I found a kindred spirit in “Sister Girl”. It made me laugh and it made me cry. I loved the relationship between “Mama” and “Tess” and “Grace”. Jonna Ivin definitely has a gift for bringing characters to life through her words and I absolutely loved this book. I’m hoping there is a sequel in the works because I really need to know more about these amazing women.
I gave this book 5 stars as it was impossible to put down. I thoroughly enjoyed it, parts of it were hysterically funny, and parts were sad or nostalgic. The author is very witty and descriptive, not at all pretentious and I just adore this book.

I have read and immensely enjoyed all of the authors other books as well.
Hands down loved it!! I felt like I was thrown back in time to my childhood again. All of the characters came through with vivid details and had me rooting for sister girl right from the start. I love that mama over came a lot to carry on as a strong female influence for her girls in a time when women were fighting for equality, but she did not really see it that way..it was her strong sense of independence and a need to make a stand on her own that drove her and that was endearing to me! And I loved the bond between the daughters and mama..they stuck together no matter what was thrown at them. The grandparents were a hoot..just adding more color to the story. I am going to have my girls read this as it stuck so many cords with me growing up in the 70's with divorced parents..I only wish our family had kept it together like Sister Girls...such a great book!!
Sister Girl's raw, sometimes brutal honesty makes it one of the most beautiful stories I have read in a very long time. A roller coaster of emotion wrapped in rich detail and wonderful characterizations, Tess and Grace will leave you rolling on the floor in laughter one moment and sobbing in your pillow the next. A "can't put it down" book that you want to never end.

As amazing and poignant as Jonna's memoir Will Love For Crumbs is, Sister Girl truly showcases her talent as a writer and chronicler of the human condition. I recommend this book without hesitation. It is definitely a "five-star" read!
My Favorite Novel

I am a middle aged male, engineer and pilot by training. Would not have picked up this title in the airport had the author not been recommended. But I imagine anyone reading this book will be moved....and changed.

I don't read novels often because they usually seem fake to me in some way. Whether they are entirely made up or based on someone's lives, I generally feel that the writing is contrived, and I have a hard time gaining a real sense of connection with the characters. To me, most novels lack depth. I think authors often take out, or forget to write in, the most important things that demonstrate people's characters and make them real human beings. After reading Sister Girl, not only do I feel I know the characters well as 'real people,' but maybe I understand my own life and my own friends and family better. The author gives a deep view into each character, and fresh insights into the human condition.

I read Ivin's other, non-fiction, work first. It impressed me greatly. Her ability to tackle complex social issues in articles made me wonder what a book by her would be like. IMO, she is able to clearly show the connections between current events & history...between what is happening in the world at large, and what is going on in our families. A very clear and sophisticated view of what is going on in human life is what I think unites her work. I guess I am going to have to read it all.

Joyous. I laughed a lot. Teared up a little too.
